The Waterford Glass Company operated in Ireland from the late 1700s until 1851 when the factory closed. One hundred years later in 1951 another Waterford glassworks was instituted that produced glass similar to the eighteenth century wares, crystal usually with cut decorations. Today Waterford is a generic term referring to the type of glass first produced there.
