This superb lithograph by J. Smit is titled Eliomys Melanurus. Joseph Smit (1836-1929) was born in the Netherlands. He was invited to Britain by Philip Sclater in 1866 and did the lithography for Sclater's Exotic Ornithology. He also did the lithography for Joseph Wolf's Zoological Sketches (second series), as well as Daniel Elliott's monographs on the Phasianeidae and Paradiseida. Smit contributed regularly to the Transactions and the Proceedings of the Zoological Society, Ibis, and The Field. Beginning in the 1870s, he worked on the massive Catalogue of Birds in the Museum, and later on the Lord Lilford's Coloured Figures of the Birds in the British Museum. Considered . . . the best animal painter in England after the death of J. Wolf -- S. Peter Dance The overall measurement including the mat is 13 3/4 X 9 3/4 in. with the print being 5 1/2 X 8 1/4. The plate number is PZS 1877 PL VI located in the upper right hand corner and it is signed in the margin. Other like prints are found in this category. This work dates around 1870. There is great attention to detail. They make a wonderful grouping. There is a tissue overlay in the middle of the folder containing the print.
