This is another lithograph in the antiquarian safari print series by J G Keulemans. It is titled Lepus Hainanus. John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912) learned lithography from Professor Hermann Schlegel while working in the Leyden Museum. Keulemans went on collecting expeditions in West Africa, where he bought a coffee plantation with the intention of settling. However, falling ill with fever, he migrated to London in 1869 and, sponsered by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, emerged as one of the finest and most prolific birds artists of all time, illustrating over 115 books while putting his distinctive stamp on every painting. The overall size of the mat and folder with a tissue overlay in between is 13 3/4 X 9 3/4. The print is 5 1/2 X 8 1/4. The plate number in the upper right corner is PZS 1872 PL XVIII and is signed. This work dates to approximately 1870. His work as well as the work of J. Smit have great detail.
